New Rockwall Restaurant, The Fatted Calf, To open Downtown

by Steven Doyle of Crave DFW

The long-open Old Timers at 112 East Rusk in Rockwall has closed only to make way for the Fatted Calf that will open soon. The Fatted Calf is owned by Zanata chef Edward Grieb, and the two restaurants are within walking distance of each other in downtown Rockwall.

The Fatted Calf will be open all day, serving breakfast and lunch with a menu that should suit all tastes and pocketbooks, with lunch service offering such interesting fare as hand made ravioli, crawfish deviled eggs, and Korean short ribs. You may also find down home plates of fried chicken and a sturdy cheese burger.

Dinner will be available twice a month with a set menu. The menu will have a fixed price and feature produce, meats, and cheeses from Texas. Eventually, dinner will expand to Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Grieb wanted to make the restaurant as affordable as possible so families could dine out often but still enjoy a good farm-to-fork quality that his other restaurants are known for. This restaurant only adds to the growing list of quality dining available in Rockwall.

Downtown Rockwall is slowly growing into a destination location. Since the inception of the Main Street Rockwall program, downtown Rockwall had continued to flourish with several new businesses and restaurants bringing life to the square. The City of Rockwall, along with other organizations, have continued to bring events to downtown increasing the popularity of Rockwall. The Founders Day Celebration, The Rib Rub and Run, The Farmers Market  and other events hosted by the Downtown Merchants Association have continued to bring people to town to see, eat, shop and experience downtown Rockwall.

The City of Rockwall is considering a bond election that will bring much needed renovations and parking to the Downtown District. With a new Rockwall City Council in place it is uncertain whether or not the bond will be brought forward. Downtown Rockwall needs the improvements to continue to flourish. Contact the your City Council for more information.
